This is a quaint town flanked by the Arabian Sea in the west and has a vast network of lakes, lagoons and freshwater rivers criss-crossing it. Alleppey is an important backwater destination attracting several thousand foreign tourists every year and is also famous for its boat races, beaches, marine products and coir industry.Places to visit: The Alleppey Beach situated in Alleppey Town is the most visited tourist destination after the backwaters. Fly a kite, get a camel ride, watch the sunset from the 60 year old Alappuzha Lighthouse, grab some street food or just sit back and enjoy the breeze!. The Revi Karunkaran Memorial Museum is famous for its exhibits of European artifacts, Swarvoski crystal and ivory. Entry fees is Rs.100/- and is open from 9am to 5pm. The museum remains closed on Mondays. Alleppey is famous for its local marketplace Mullackal Street that offers variety of shops and stalls that sell from jewelry to spices at lower prices, provided you are good at bargaining. More stalls are put up for the annual festival of the Sree Rajarajeshwari Temple located in the market premises. A variety of handicrafts and products are using coconuts, and you can discover all the creativity experimented on coconut in the International Coir Museum. The museum is open from 9am to 5pm and remains closed on Mondays. Entry fee approximately Rs.20/-. If time permits, Pathiramanal Island is also a worthwhile destination to visit in Alleppey. The island situated in a lake offers a scenic view of the thick green vegetation and is an ideal place for bird watching.
